Born November 15th 1971, Brussels, Belgium

After obtaining his graduation degree from Cairo University, Architectural Department in 1994, Cherif went through a few jobs related to architecture till 1997 when he opened his own studio, AVANTGARDE, to deal with all aspects of design such as: architecture, interior, graphic and product. He believes that all fields of design are very inter-related and each gives an extra “plus” to the other field making the whole experience even deeper and richer.
His turning point was when he won a Special Mention in the design competition the famous ALESSI (Italy) organized in 2000 and in which more than 700 international designers participated and only 11 projects, Cherif’s included, made it to the final selection.
In 2004, SAWAYA & MORONI edited his Voodoo ashtray and became part of their permanent Spring Accessories collection. It is very symbolic and aims at being an invitation to quit smoking through a “humorous” approach….
In 2005, he was part of a collective exhibition at the famous Triennale of Milan. The exhibition, organized by DesignBoom (Milan, Italy), was called “ A Door to Paradise” and Cherif’s project was also published in its official catalogue under the supervision of Philippe Starck.
In 2007, he was one of nine winners in the competition the famous Dutch design company DROOG DESIGN organized. It was a t-shirt that was supposed to reflect Droog’s identity… Cherif’s t-shirt called “Simply Droog” is now in production with the same company (Droog).
 
He is currently working on many projects for prestigious companies in Italy, Sweden, Holland, Spain and Japan as well as locally in Egypt where he mainly do a lot of interiors project for high-end customers. In 1999, he designed promotional plates for Mc Donald’s Egypt and sold over 100.000 units…

Cherif is Egyptian and lives / works in Cairo, Egypt.
He is married to Kat and are expecting a baby daughter in early November 2007 hopefully!
